Bryan Q. Miller’s Smallville Season 11 knocks another one out of the park this week.
My OT6 is the biggest bunch of badasses that ever lived: Chloe and Babs running interference from the air, Lois and Ollie on bikes running interference on the ground, Bruce doing that AMAZING drift-thing with the Tumbler!Batmobile, Babs driving the batmobile remotely, Ollie launching himself up to the helecopter, Bruce taking the kryptonite bullets out of Clark in a moving car…
If any of that sounds awesome to you, it’s because it totally was! I don’t care that they’ve never all worked as a team before, it was flawless. Seriously folks, buy this comic. The whole Detective arc is totally worth it. I never want Batman and Nightwing to go back to Gotham ever.
(And PS, Stephanie Brown fans - this is the writer who gave us Steph as Batgirl. Yes, he wanted to use this as a vehicle to return her to comics and that didn’t pan out, but it is as well written, it’s my personal favorite thing DC is putting out right now. So support him!!)
Comics I’m Currently In Love With - Smallville Season 11 by Bryan Q Miller
This book has been lauded as the best Superman book that DC is producing since the New 52 reboot, and this is not an exaggeration. However, I will go on to say that this is the best Superman book that DC has produced in 4 years. Several factors are working to accomplish this: the Superman/Clark Kent dual identity is fully intact (even with the current situation that Clark is having to deal with no thanks to Lex), Clark and Lois’ relationship is fully intact and Lois is still working as a reporter at the Daily Planet, the writing of this book is excellent from the dialogue to the plotting to the characterizations of the characters, there is a supporting cast of characters almost reminiscent of the Superman books from the 90s which helps to flesh out the world in which these characters exist, multiple female characters with their own personalities, strengths, and motivations, and most importantly (to me), a Superman with humanity and Hope. Even the introduction of Batman to the Smallville universe hasn’t taken away from Clark’s strength as a man and a hero—in fact, it has actually strengthened Clark’s character as his moral code is reinforced through this team up.
BQM has also managed to weave in multiple plot points in just these two episodes all while still managing to give us character and relationship development, continuity, humor, and a book to look forward to 3 Fridays every month when the digital chapters are released (or for the bibliophiles, a print issue every month). Smallville gave me something to look forward to every week and brought back the joy I had when I first started reading comics.
Remember to purchase a digital copy of the next chapter in Smallville: Season 11’s first arc, “Guardian,” available today at ComiXology and the DC app. It’s only $.99 and buying a copy means letting DC Comics know you support Lois and Clark.
Since the first issue of “Guardian” was successful enough to warrant a reprint, please consider buying another or your first if you didn’t buy a copy already. Plus, it has a different cover featuring Gary Frank’s art of Clark above the Earth as Superman in Smallville’s series finale, which you can see here courtesy of @since1938.
Like, I’m imagining Clark and Bruce in Watchtower bonding and whatnot, Oliver comes in like, “Hey Clark check out my new arrow!” And Clark being all “That’s nice Oliver—So, Bruce you have a utility belt? So do I kindasorta!” Or Oliver asking Clark for help with a case, but Clark’s like “Oh but Bruce invited me to check out his cave. Can we do it tomorrow? kloveyabye” or “Yeah I’m in the Batmobile now so..hey I’m losing signal”
OR Clark and Bruce comparing belts and Oliver feeling left out cuz he doesn’t have one.
OR!!! Clark and Bruce snarking at each other (then laughing afterwards…because headcanon Bruce actually laughs sometimes) and Oliver being all…”but that was *our* thing.” or “But Watchtower was *our* place.”
I can imagine Oliver griping about it to Chloe and her getting quite annoyed.
Like, what if Clark starts suggesting things to Oliver like…”Bruce uses titaniam in his grappling hooks, you ever thought about that?” “Bruce names everything with a Bat in front of it, how come you don’t name everything with Arrow?” (OMG what if the reason Oliver starts naming things with “Arrow” in front of it is because of Clark gushing about Bruce’s Batcave and Batmobile.)
“You know, you and Bruce have a lot in common, except Bruce is scarier and his criminals kind of fear him more than yours do.” “Bruce has a partner named Nightwing but her real name is Stephanie. Hey whatever happened to Mia? I liked her. You should do like Bruce and make Mia your partner.” “Bruce has a Batmobile (it’s kind of amazing). Why don’t you get, like, an Arrow-mobile or something? I’m sure Bruce could help with that.” “I *know* you’re a billionaire and you don’t ‘need’ Bruce’s help, it was just a thought.” “Bruce let me use his zip line. It. Was. Awesome. How come you never let me use *your* zip line, Oliver?”
Now I’m imagining this conversation that Lois will have to have with Clark. Because Clark can be a bit obtuse, God love him. Lois will be like “Clark honey, you’ve been spending a lot of time with Bruce—” and Clark cutting her off “HE’S AWESOME RIGHT?!”
Oh and Bruce will harcore fanboy Clark too. Right in Oliver’s face. But he’ll be more stoic about it like, “Clark took me flying, nbd. Did he ever take you flying?” “Clark is teaching me Kryptonian, nbd. Has he taught you Kryptonian. He probably thinks you don’t want to.” “Also, his Fortress is pretty impressive. I got to interact with the A.I., nbd. Have you been to the Fortress? No? Maybe Clark will invite you one day.” “Hey look at this ring Clark gave me. Says he trusts only me with it. I probably won’t use it much. You ever use Kryptonite on him Ollie?” (I had to go there. Also, Bruce can be pretty catty.) “I invited Clark to this gala at the museum. He seemed pretty excited about it. I’d invite you, Ollie, but I only have three tickets.”
(Headcanon Bruce says nbd a lot)
And then Kimmie and Chris suggested this gem: “So, Ollie, I was thinking we need to update the Watchtower systems before we go to the game—
“OH IT’S THE BATSIGNAL! Gotta run Ollie kloveyabye” *WHOOSH
(gif not mine, but it’s hilariously appropriate)
This title lives or dies by your patronage. Go out and buy or download. Don’t torrent. Support.
And if you’re loving ‘Guardian’…just wait. 11x02 ‘TitleIncrediblyRedacted’ is just…wow. History in the making. The title and solicit for that will hit Monday and the Smallville fandom is going to implode. Very psyched for 11x04 as well.
therearecertainshadesoflimelight said: Clark’s penis being Chloe’s reward for “good behavior” will always be my fave. She earned it, Maggie! She earned his penis more than Lois did! She worked hard for that dick! Lois just got his dick handed to her. Over and over and over again. Sometimes on top.
After a few weeks off there is a new digital issue of Smallville Season 11 for you to download. Here’s the cover by Cat Staggs:
And here’s a peek inside courtesy of Comixology.
I couldn’t confirm that DC was promoting this issue. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t. The digital issues were…
Smallville 5x12 Reckoning - 4x12 Pariah
another reason why it’s always gonna be lois/clark in the end. in every incarnation.
My thoughts exactly
Oh look at that, consistent characterization.
